Review of Sweetgrass (2009) by Tony O — 07 Jan 2011
Mesmerizing account of a group of sheep herders final trek across the Beartooth Mountains. The premise could have easily been wrapped up in a local news story, or even a short film, but the film's willingness to observe, and its meticulous effort to make every shot absolutely breathtaking earns its run time.
The gravity of many of the shots don't sink in until they've been on screen for a full minute. No VO, interviews, or music, the real star is the audio, juxtaposing the deafening cries of sheep, with the stillness of the mountain air, and back to the overpowering whir of machines.
Instantly one of my favorite documentaries.
