Review of Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971) by Jolie C — 17 Feb 2008
It might require some context to appreciate fully, or indeed, at all, but rest assured this is a true classic of independant, experimental filmmaking. It's eclipsed by its own reputation as the catalyst for the blaxploitation movement, but it's still an awesome and surreal vision that's split evenly between pure entertainment and raw passion.
Of course, it's silly to classify the film as high art, but it's a far shot from the base aspirations of its legacy, and to a filmmaker, it's pure inspiration.
