Defying conventions both political and technical, Sweet Sweetback was revolutionary for its time. For some audiences today its relevance is bound to have weakened--especially when considering the end of the film, which seemingly deteriorates into a montage of home movies more than it does stick to a narrative course--but its impact on cinema, both black and white, is undeniable.
