Review of Sweet Smell of Success (1957) by Ross B — 14 Aug 2010
A absolute classic about the slime and deep underbelly of show business and marketing. Tony Curtis is amazing as a sleazy press agent who is willing to do almost anything in order to suck up to the most powerful columnist in New York City in order to get his clients mentioned in it.
That includes destroying other people's lives if necessary. The real star of the show though is Burt Lancaster as J.J. Hunsecker, the powerful NYC columnist who owns almost every scene he is in. He reminds me of a modern day Glen Beck or Keith Olberman, not in the political views department but in his style of delivery and editorial nature.
While the print media is almost dead, the lessons and themes of this movie are just as relevant today as they were over 50 years ago.
