Review of Sweet Smell of Success (1957) by Jesse L — 05 Nov 2003
Quick response: Brutal film noir/drama fusion. Formidable performance from Burt Lancaster (who I generally dislike), but the stand-out is Tony Curtis a press-agent slimeball willing to do whatever it takes to reach the top.
Some of James Wong Howe's best cinematography work, and a scathing script by Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman contribute to the jazzy atmosphere and cyncial, hard-edged tone. Overall a great film.
