Review of Sweet Sixteen (2002) by Kyle 4 — 20 Feb 2004
Sweet Sixteen totally and completely misled me. From the advertisements I'd seen, and the DVD cover, I was expecting something in the vein of Trainspotting - no, not because of the accents, I expected it to be a fast paced crime comedy. Couldn't have been more wrong. It's actually an overdramatic crime drama about characters who make unbelievably ridiculous decisions and leaves you underwhelmed and asking "That was it?" when the credits roll.
Mystic River I loved - until the last 7 or so minutes. *SPOILERS*
If the last spoken words of dialogue were 'When was the last time you saw Dave Boyle?' and the reply, or something along the lines of that, the emotional impact that would have been left would be perfect with the tone of the rest of the film. The aftermath with Jimmy and his wife was completely unnecessary. Would it have made any difference had you cut out Sean's wife?[/spoiler].
Ugh. Two potentially good viewings nearly ruined. Let's see if Bio-Zombie can get my spirits back up.
