Review of Sweet Movie (1974) by Kyle H — 08 Sep 2007
If you want to make a movie that will become a classic, despite your total lack of storytelling but obvious gift at cinematography, you make a movie that gets banned, be foreign, and get on board with Criterion.
I understand subversive, deplorable, disgusting cinema as much as the other person, but I need a reason, despite grotesque imagery. The only thing I liked about this movie was the stance on materialism, especially the man's wedding speech, which referred to his wife as a "thing".
If this was the first foreign film I've ever seen, I wouldn't watch anymore. Thankfully, I can now stay away from Yugoslavian directors.
