Review of Sweet Land (2005) by Sv G — 03 Oct 2007
Cinematically beautiful and wonderful performances by all. A sweet story of a mail-order bride in the 1920s who arrives in a Minnesota farming community carrying her luggage and a gramophone who was thought to be Norwegian but is German.
The movie shows the correlation between the prejudice & inter-personal struggles this couple had to endure to the physical struggles on the land they worked so hard to hang onto. Some things are worth the struggle to hang onto, like music, like land, like love; the things that do indeed make our lives (all hard) "sweet".
The film takes us from the 20s to the 60s to present time throughout the movie which at times seemed too disjointed, but over-all just a lovely story.
