Review of Sweet Land (2005) by Jonathan H — 14 May 2008
Surprised to see Alan Cumming sporting a half-shaved head/punk-rock long-hair overlay that somehow is supposed to transport me back to post-WWI midwestern America, but hey, it kind of worked. The movie is slow, deliberate, and often ordinary, but there's beauty in the subtlety and in the wide, landscape shots.
The dialogue is choppy, confusing for its lack of purpose, and yet it feels true. I like movies like this, although they're sometime staxing to watch, and since not much happens, it's hard to leave with a total sense of satisfaction.
Meant to be seen and enjoyed as something artistic, but not necessarily as something overtly entertaining.
