Review of Sweet Home Alabama (2002) by Lee B — 07 Sep 2009
Romcoms are generally something that I dislike. I hate the disingenuous situations and dialogue that usually is not spoken by 99.9% of the general population to others of romantic interest or about people romantically interested in to friends. However, when they are good, I do appreciate them. This one is saved for me by a greater spectrum of relationship targeting and a nice twist on the fish out of water idea.
To state it now, I actually dislike Reese Witherspoon. Something about her annoys me and not in an overall loathsome way like Jessica Alba or Paris Hilton. I just don?t really like watching her in movies. And this says a lot when I say she isn?t bad in this. I am positive she is a good actor, but at least in Election she was supposed to be disliked and played June Carter cash muted which I guess won her a Oscar that I?m sure she didn?t deserve it but just too lazy to research. And they play her not just at odds with her ex, but her parents, friends, everybody really. And that she was a local that tried to wash all of that off her and now she is thrown back in. It worked for descent comedy.
However, it does have the contrived situations that lead up to the end but had enough to play up for laughs and was good enough with the emotional development. Not a bad one, and definitely one to watch before the majority.
