Review of Sweet and Lowdown (1999) by Willem W — 10 Jul 2007
Penn and Morton take Woody Allen's appealing and entertaining screenplay and fly with it. The faux-documentary approach gives the film a context and realism that draws us deeper into these two wonderful characters.
More amazingly, Morton's performance is entirely wordless and she has a face like Clara Bow, every emotion reads clearly on her range of expressions. Penn inhabits the role of a talented shit with gusto, skill, and humour.
One of Woody Allen's best films.
