Review of Sweet and Lowdown (1999) by Frankie A — 30 Jun 2008
Watching Sean Penn pretend to be the 2nd greatest guitarist in the world, when he would have trouble with the bass line of Smoke on the Water ruined the film for me. Woody who is a gifted musician should have used a double for a few closeups.
Instead, Sean Penn tries too hard to mimic the head movements of a professional guitarist, when you can clearly see he isn't playing anything that would sound like music. The rest of the movie is really good - but this killed it for me.
