Review of Sweet and Lowdown (1999) by Lisa M — 10 Apr 2009
Woody, Penn and jazz, I'm sold. The music is gorgeous, the look of the film is a beaut and Woody directs the film with a real love for the subject.
Penn is absolutely terrific. His take on Emmet is hilarious, playing him as a deluded ego maniac who puts his craft above everything else. Yet for all his flaws, you can't help but love the guy. Morton is also exceptionally good. She communicates everything you need to know through her smiles. There were moments in this film that had me really cracking up, particularly towards the end where the multiple theories about what happened at the gas station are played out.
An undiscovered little gem of a film that highlights Penn's conisderable comedy chops.
