Review of Sweet and Lowdown (1999) by Caleb M — 06 May 2009
Watching a Woody Allen film is always a good experience, from his great films, so more lighthearted fare Allen always brings that unique touch to his films you know can't be found anywhere else. Sweet and Lowdown is one of those sweet, melancholy Allen films filled with enough humor to be called a comedy, but also enough emotion to be called a drama.
Going in you may expect one thing from this film, but comming out you will have seen Allen's thoughts on how life and art are intertwined. Penn is great, perfectly placing himself in Allen's offbeat world, but Samantha Morton is stunning; beautiful and sweet, she shows more emotion and character in a simple frown or grin than it would seem possible.
