Review of Sweet and Lowdown (1999) by Todd L — 01 Aug 2009
Of Woody Allen's more recent films, this is one of the best. A sweet and intriguing story played as if it were 100% true, which it's not. This may also be Sean Penn's best performance. I admit, I often have a hard time enjoying Penn as an actor because he comes across as a such a vile person in real life.
Here he plays a truly vile person, but manages to make him loveable. And, of course, the music is beautiful.
