Review of Sweet and Lowdown (1999) by Cesar C — 16 Feb 2010
'Sweet and Lowdown' was a pleasant surprise. While the script that was to become this film was originally intended as one of Allen's first works, it got shelved only to resurface almost 30 years later.
This almost-true story of a fictitious larger-than-life jazz guitarrist was entertaining from beginning to end. By the end of the movie, I was convinced that Emmet Ray was real, I only found out otherwise after reading the reviews. Samantha Morton's portrayal of 'Hattie' is an example of how much can be conveyed by an actor without uttering a single word.
