Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) by Himmul K — 06 Aug 2012

Honestly, this is one of my favorite movies. Its dark, reasonably smart, the performances (both musical and acting wise) are pitch perfect and it was just a great movie.

Tim Burton is relentlessly criticized for his "over usage" of Johnny Depp. But Depp is always perfect in his movies, Depp has the range that is perfect, he can be serious, dark, scary, funny, and just plain awesome. He owned the role of Sweeney Todd and I really dug his subtleness.

Bonham Carter was extremely good as Mrs. Lovett...maybe a little too good. Great chemistry between Depp and her.

Alan Rickman seemed like he was playing Snape to me but it kinda fit so its okay.

This movie is BLOODY so beware. Its rated R for good reason I assure. Todd kills everyone the same way, straight razor to the throat, but somehow it doesnt get repetitive even with a montage of him doing it OVER AND OVER.

The musical numbers were very impressive, everyone did their own singing and they were pretty fantastic too. And music is pretty much all of it too, most of the exposition you will get is through song so if you have a problem with musicals, dont even bother.

All that aside, there is one problem I had with the movie. I felt it was a wee bit too long, the could have easily cut a good ten or fifteen minutes out and it would have been fine, but thats a minor gripe. So you should definitely pick it up if u like Burtons flicks, Johnny Depp, or musicals. Enjoy!
