Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) by Calan P — 10 Aug 2013
I loved Sweeney Todd. I was skeptical at first due to the fact that it was a musical and I don't particularly care for that genre. Fortunately, this movie has a very unique style and great performances.
This is a Tim Burton movie, so of course it features Johnny Depp. I was blown away by how good of a singer he is. Alan Rickman, Sasha Baron Coen and Helena Bonham Carter are also very talented singers. These songs do get stick in your head trust me. Some seem redundant but they are still fun.
The style used in most musicals is why I don't like them. They are overly happy and have forced and cheesy romance stories. With Sweeney Todd you have a dark, moody atmosphere, and a believable love story. This movie is dark, incredibly dark. From pies that are made of people and cats to killing people with razors, this movie eliminates the stereotype usually put with musicals.
Tim Burton makes this musical with such excellence that you would swear he's made many musicals before. This is definitely my favorite musical of all-time, due to its fantastic performances and brings something new to the genre.
