Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) by Mimi S — 29 Oct 2012
Grade: A.
Sweeney Todd may be a dark and morose film; but it make up for it with some good performances, especially from Helena Bonham Carter, Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman and new comer Edward Sanders. Sweeney Todd is a horror/musical about a bitter and vindictive barber who was falsely accused of a crime by the evil judge Turpin (Rickman) and sent away for years of hard labour, whilst Turpin stole his beloved wife and daughter. He comes back years later and strike up a friendship with the bubbly Mrs Lovett (Bonham-Carter) and the two plan revenge. Although the film was so bleak and unchromathc,it had catchy songs, good characters and elements of dark comedy. Normally I dont like gory films, but I really enjoyed Sweeney Todd, it had a really unusual twist to it and some great characters. Definitely another one of Tim Burton's triumphs.
