Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) by Dave S — 03 Feb 2015
Anyone who has seen this musical before will be grossly disappointed. Johnny Depp is terribly miscast, and Burton undermines the story by leaving out any lighter moments of the musical (ie: "He Wants To Marry Me Sunday"), which in the original make Todd's deeds all the more sinister.
Burton's pointless obsession with Depp and Bonham Carter limits the movie and makes this a dreary and punishing two hours. Hopefully Soundheim was paid a boatload of cash to let someone ruin his musical.
