Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) by Will L — 11 Mar 2014
A love letter to Hammer by way of Broadway, Burton's take on the hit musical is indulgent, gory fun. Stephen Sondheim's songs, though trimmed, flow with delicious mania yet also a note of tragedy as they tell of the demon's barber fall.
Add in Burton's trademark aesthetic, with his whites contrasting nicely against the red of blood, and a fine tuned cast in both of the required senses, and it hits the right notes.
