Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) by Jess L — 06 Feb 2013
The world welcomes back musicals with yet another wonderful modern addition to the list. Burton has again mastered the art of darkness in Sweeney and the cast are simply wonderful. Depp surprises with his vocal talents and delights with his humour, Carter plays the wench like role to a T, Rickman seems born to play the villain and even Sacha Baron Cohen excels in his role as the poser.
All the elements seem to combine together flawlessly and make this film a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Though the blood and killing is over the top it may not be for everyone and I found myself getting a bit over it by the end of the film, just a personal thing about throat slitting really.
Incredibly dark, Gothic and mesmorising this is a must see film for Burton and Depp fans and lovers of musicals.
