Review of Swamp Thing (1982) by James S — 28 Nov 2008
Seriously, this film has some really bad, cheesy, man-in-a-rubber-suit FX. It seriously deviates from the classic Len Wein-scribed & Berni Wrightson-illustrated DC comics horror/superhero comic of the early 1970s. The film does have an enduring hero in Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise) who transforms into the titular hero of the piece (Dick Durock). The film has the gorgeous Adrienne Barbeau in her "scream queen" phase who plays a tough-as-nails government agent who takes a nude swim while the longing hero watches her from afar. And there is Louis Jourdan as the scenery-chewing villian Arcane. Not one of Wes Craven's best films but a thoroughly enjoyable film if you apreciate dreck.
DC comics re-launched its Swamp Thing title in 1982 to coincide with this film. A few years later, Alan Moore (Watchmen, V For Vendetta, From Hell, Etc.) became the regular script writer on the title.
