Review of Swamp Thing (1982) by Slappy M — 13 Mar 2011
For Wes Craven's first film in which he isn't working with original material, he adapts one of comics' most off the wall characters into a awesomely kick ass compendium of schlock. Swamp Thing is many things, but what it isn't is a movie taking itself too seriously.
Just look at the scene in which Swampy, after taking a number of bullets and having his arm shot off his former girlfriend Alice (Adrienne Barbeau) asks 'Does it hurt?' 'Only when I laugh' he replies.
Rather than applying his own guerrilla aesthetics, the kind that made his early films, Last House on The Left and The Hills Have Eyes, so groundbreaking, Craven uses old, Universal-type B-movies as inspiration, making Swamp Thing wicked fun.
As far as early comic book movies go, Swamp Things is definitely one of the better ones.
