Review of Suspiria (2018) by Nadjib R — 24 Jan 2019
The original Suspiria, I would say it's my most loved movie ever, so I was a bit nervous to see a remake, and more after reading some not so enthusiastic reviews. My veredict? I've seen it for the second time and, well, the new Suspiria is an absolute masterpiece to me.
It gets there in completely different, even opposed, ways, but retaining the higher concepts: aesthetics, suggestion, tension, and the basic premise. It brings THE DANCE to the center, and wow, how delightful it is, and what an achievement to integrate it into the horror in such an intelligent way.
It is brave, for achieving the freedom of not being tied to the original script, and ambitious in a good way. It shines in some of the, objectively, 1977's weakest points, such as a very basic dialogue and some performances -not that I love it less for this.
But here the script and performances are astounding. Well, what more can I say? I am ready for a sequel of this one, or eehm.. an attept to remake Inferno, or for a third version, or whatever that gets me back into the Suspiria universe.
And for the professional reviewers that rate it negatively, well, I don't know what is their idea of good cinema. It's obvious that it is not a movie for everyone, but don't attempt to judge a progressive jazz album if it's reggaeton what you are into.
