Review of Suspiria (2018) by Cristian B — 05 Nov 2018
A flawed, but gorgeous and haunting remake of the 1977 horror classic. This is a movie that will surely divide audiences. The narrative does suffer from being overly convoluted for its own good. The movie's length is also unnecessarily overlong.
Despite its faults, director Guadagnino creates an eerie and unnerving atmosphere that is beautifully realized through the stylish cinematography and Yorke's effective musical score and songs. The actors are all terrific, especially Goth, Swinton (playing multiple roles) and Johnson.
Whatever issues the movie has, Guadagnino and company cast a spell that is difficult to shake through the disturbing and strange imagery, along with a climax that lets the mayhem rule. A challenging, but rewarding experience.
Grade: B+.
