Review of Suspiria (1977) by Samuel C — 19 Jun 2010
Going back to Suspiria after many years makes for interesting viewing. It's hard to view without having some expectations. Argento is considered a horror 'genius'. Suspiria is a beautifully photographed film and takes great care and seriousness with it's art. It's as if Argento has set out to film something far more serious. His camera angles, choice of lighting and sets all speak to something of a granduer not typically associated with horror. As a horror fan, I enjoyed the serious nature and craftsmanship brought to this production. My greatest critique is with the soundtrack. The music is awful. Awful. The soundtrack is too loud, overused and disruptive. The visuals have a lasting sophistication to them while the music is outdated an overly dramatic. I know, it was the seventies, but it's hard to sit through. I kept thinking how much better this film would be if the score was changed or the volume lowered.
Its a slow creep of a film and for the horror genre, it's high art. Unfortunately, the soundtrack is dated and distracting.
