Review of Suspiria (1977) by Leighton T — 07 Oct 2010
It is definitely camp at heart, but Dario Argento knows what to do with a camera and this makes Suspiria an expert B horror movie. It's the below-the-line fields which make the film work better than it should.
The cinematography is incredible, with expert use of color and lighting along with some magnificent shots. The art direction works right along with this in creating an atmosphere that at once dates the film, but without it, it wouldn't be as good.
The Goblins' soundtrack is perfect. It's eerie, tonal, terrifying, and carries the intensity of a lot of scenes. So where the story and dialogue lack (even though it knows this and so, therefore it fits.
..sorta), everything else makes it such a good viewing experience that you find you've quite enjoyed yourself.
