Review of Suspiria (1977) by Liz — 25 Jun 2011

One of the greatest movies of all time. its a true work of art by argento. the execution of the murders is perfect. the fear is there. one amazing italian film. with a horrifying soundtrack & great bright & bold coloring by technicolor. particularly the reds.

Some draw backs...its a little confusing & takes concentration & thinking...& attentive listening (sub titles might help) some of the enunciation is hard to understand at times. there is very little in the plot factor.

I remember being afraid of horror films but for some reason when I saw this on the guide, it stuck to me. I eventually became a horror freak after watching the original halloween.& of all the horror film names I knew this one always stuck. but I was never able to watch it. for over a year thinking of this film & what its like filled my every thought. then finally I was able to see it! it was a saturday on midnight on fmc. I was blown away. it quickly replaced carrie as my faveorite film. I loved every minute. but something happened...i fell asleep at the last 10 minutes. I woke up like 3 minutes after the end. never did something like this make me cry. no not cry...my face tightened & reddened. a tear did roll out. but it was more of a whine.(god im such a dramatic loser). it took a veeerry long time but it finally came back on.& on a perfect time 7:30!! I finally saw the whole film. it stuck with me. it was my first argento film. my first giallo. my first italian. though I was not aware it was italian or foreign for that matter. I looked it up one day and learned of its origins. ive seen this film probably 6 times. thats the most ive seen almost any film out there. learning of its director & his fame it interested me to watch some of his others. inferno (semi sequel to suspiria), phenomena, and profondo rosso. all very good, but this is top! but I must warn you, do not watch this on fmc, they cut out sooo much its ridiculous. much gore is gone, there are even a few missing scenes. so either watch it on dvd or go to youtube. trust me you will highly enjoy it.

Argento knows what he is doing. many camera shots that are pretty irrelevant but belong somehow.& many menacing camera angles.& a very terrific but horrifying score from goblin. a must watch for any true horror fan.
