Review of Suspiria (1977) by Matt C — 15 Apr 2012
Borrowing heavily from Powell Pressburger's The Red Shoes, this brightly coloured horror/suspense picture struggles through plot, logic and translation problems. Feeling more like an opera or a stage play, Suspiria does have a number of visual gems and some very good acting by Jessica Harper (not to mention some stunning sets and costumes), but ultimately struggles against its US contemporaries of the same year Annie Hall, Star Wars and Close Encounters.
