Review of Suspiria (1977) by Kenneth B — 01 Nov 2015
One of Argento's best films. I used to consider this my favourite but I could probably toss a coin between this, Tenebre, Profondo Rosso and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Suspiria is distinct to those films on the basis that is isn't Giallo.
It is a straight horror movie about a mysterious ballet school, which turns out to be a witches coven. It works on atmosphere rather than gore, although there is one gory scene early on, that is very much an exception.
It is more reliant on special effects than the other films I mentioned and perhaps for this reason it has lost some of its impact. However nitpicking at special effects from 1970s horror films isn't a practice I take too seriously, it's all relative, right? Suspiria still has the capacity to thrill and it is without doubt a film that I will continue to return to.
