Review of Survival of the Dead (2010) by James F — 09 May 2010
In all the horror genre, my favourite's always been the zombie flick. I love the original Night of the Living Dead, it was a real ground breaker as an independent movie and both Dawn and Day of the Dead were excellent films in their own right to.
It's a sad day when you finally realise that a director whose movies you've enjoyed over the years is finally past it and I hate to say it but I really think thats the case now with George Romero.
When in 2005 Romero rocked back on to the scene with Land of the Dead I was pretty excited that the master of horror was returning, overall however, I felt it was a pretty weak movie. Then in 2008, I was shocked with just how bad Diary of the Dead was. Okay, there was the whole "society's obsession with reality TV which is turning us in to zombies" message running through it, kind of cool, but overall the story and the acting was so bad, that no deep theme could really save it.
So, I suppose I wasn't really shocked when Survival of The Dead was even worse than its last two predecessors. One major factor is the ridiculous attempt at slapstick humour that pops up every once in a while before it goes back to trying to be serious (catching zombies on fishing rods by accident....seriously wtf?!?). The others would be the paper thin, piss poor plot that must have been sketched on the back of a napkin and then the atrocious characters made worse by the acting and terrible dialogue.
Its a real shame to see Romero descend to this crapola and I struggle to see how when he made this, he thought it was decent in anyway. He can only be doing it for the money now because his love and respect for this genre has truly withered and died. A bad, bad movie.
