Review of Survival of the Dead (2010) by Collin W — 04 Jun 2010
I'm a Romero fanboy, so there was no getting around the expectations surrounding "Survival of the Dead". It is a disappointment, easily the weakest of Romero's zombie films. This disjointed mishmash of (anemic) horror and (I suppose you could call it) satire shows Romero at his most.
..confused? I don't know what he's trying to say. But you can bet he's saying something; all of his zombie films have included astute social commentary. The commentary here is terribly forced in the final seconds of the film, as if to justify the meandering preceding action.
There's not much happening in Romero's craft, no energy onscreen to imply he enjoyed making the movie. It is poorly and sloppily shot. Each action sequence is a series of (mostly) static shots occupied by stilted and absurd blocking.
The actors move around as if unaware and resort to unwarranted yelling to manufacture drama. This film is boring, so constipated by swashbuckling dialogue and laughable acting that there's no chance for this story to build momentum.
