Review of Surf's Up 2: WaveMania (2017) by Bily T — 10 Jul 2017

Surf's Up 2: Wave Mania is a disappointing sequel to one of my favourite animated movies. This movie was a collaberation with Sony Pictures Animation who made the first movie and with the WWE studios starting a quote on quote "trend" of WWE cartoon crossovers, they've done other animated movies with other cartoons like The Flintstones, The Jetsons and Scooby-Doo and this movie is their most recent.

When I first heard there was gonna be a sequel to Surf's up I was really excited to see it, but when I found out it was gonna be direct to DVD and it would star WWE Wrestlers I wasn't too keen on it but then it finally came out and I was very disappointed about the movie.

The story is meh, the cast has changed apart from the actor who plays Chicken Joe who is still played by Jon Heder, the main character Cody instead of being played by Shia LaBeouf, Cody is now played by Jeremy Shada who is well known for being Finn the Human from Adventure Time.

Anyways the casting is okay, I think they should've stick with the original cast instead of replacing them apart from the actor who played Chicken Joe since he was in the original movie.

Acting wise they sound like they're having fun playing the characters so I'll give them that, Music is forgettable, we don't really get to learn anything new about the old characters and they sometimes repeat what they did in the first movie which is pretty lazy, the jokes are mixed of being cringy or just not funny at all.

One thing I'll say though is that the animation is decent, it's better animation than Sony Pictures Animation's recent movies like the Hotel Transylvania movies and the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movies, I'd say it's on the level of Open Season's animation but I would've liked it better if it added something new to the table but who am I kidding this is Sony Pictures Animation where they don't add anything new to the animation Table unlike DreamWorks, Disney and Pixar.

I don't think I should really recommend this movie to any fans of the first movie or fans of WWE since these movie crossovers are clearly cash grabs so they probably could make sequels, kinda like the direct to video/DVD sequels to the Disney movies.

So I think it's best to stay away from this movie even if your a fan of the WWE series or Surf's Up, but this isn't the worst that Sony Pictures Animation can go, that title will be going to their next animated movie which I highly recommend you don't ever go and see not even if a family member wants to go and see it and make sure they don't go and see it either.

I give Surf's Up 2: Wave Mania a 3 out of 10 a very disappointing movie that is clearly a cash grab on something that is beloved by some people.
