Review of Supernova (2000) by Eric W — 21 Jul 2010
The first flag that comes up when one views the film Supernova is that the film gives directing credit to Thomas Lee. Never heard of him? That is because he doesn't exist. Thomas Lee is a moniker used because nobody wanted to take credit for this 70 million dollar disaster.
Supposedly directed by Walter Hill (though a last ditch effort to save the film was given by Francis Ford Coppola.)The film has signuture Walter Hill messiness all over it. Take every Sci-fi space film you have ever enjoyed, shake well, empty, and pour the contents of this film out onto you screen.
The story is about as cookie cutter as a sci fi movie can be. There is a ship, they lose their captain, a mysterious pilot takes over, they answer a distress call, everybody at the site of the call is dead save for man, this man has a secret.
etc etc. Visually, the movie does look pretty good, Effects are cheesy but in that fun Sci-Fi kind of way. The ship's desgin is not as cookie cutter as the plot and the interior looks like it belongs in a futuristic space ship.
However, the boring plot and generic perfomances (James Spader and Angela Basset do okay here with what they are given) and the fact that their are too many better Sci Fi films that do something innovative, bog this film down.
Based on effects, and the fact that the film does chug along fairly well despite the plot, I give this movie 2 stars out of 5.
