Review of Superman: Unbound (2013) by The Critic ( — 29 May 2013
As competently produced as any of DC's previous direct-to-DVD features, but this particular one ends with too many loose ends to be truly rewarding.
Its emotional core is that of Superman's conflicting priorities; his duty of care to humanity, the woman he loves and his recently arrived cousin, Supergirl, whose own internal struggles presents some really interesting and complex dilemmas. Unfortunately, they're not delved into far enough. For example, can Supergirl simply remain on Earth whilst family and friends are given the opportunity to relocate and return to a peaceful existence?
The film tries to fit in a lot in such a limited running time (75 minutes) that it falls short of the mark. In saying that, it's a beautifully animated and strongly acted piece that shouldn't be overlooked.
