Review of Superman: Unbound (2013) by Emilio H — 14 May 2013
Superman and Supergirl take on Brainiac in this animated feature based on Superman: Brainiac. Animation and voice acting wise, the movie is great. There's a good musical score and lots of action, but I feel the one thing its missing is emotional depth.
There are two main reasons why Geoff John's Superman: Brainiac is considered groundbreaking. First, it retcons Brainiac into a Coluan alien type creature instead of a self regenerating computer. Secondly, the emotional loss of Jonathan Kent, Superman's adopted father.
The film does offer a different kind of climax in a cool battle in a swamp land, but its lack of emotional heart makes this just a simple and entertaining summer blockbuster type movie instead of anything more.
It was fun while it lasted, but I won't be adding this to my blu-ray collection.
