Review of Superman Returns (2006) by Brendan N — 11 May 2013
When singer was announced to helm the return of superman to the big screen I thought it was a match made in heaven. Singer had just breathed life into x men which I honestly had thought was unfilmable. He turned what could of been an epic disaster into something much deeper and interesting. The problem I've got with he's superman is the lack of any excitement.
Singer is a talented director and crafted a classic mind bending film with the usual suspects. The real issue is the slow pace and genuine lack of any real action. The story holes are quite apparent and the superboy part honestly had me reaching for the stop button. Richard donner had to work within the limits of he's superman as the effects weren't available at the time. Tim burtons batman also suffers a slow burning storyline. Singer sadly felt the audiences wanted another slow superman story which we did not.
The characters are quite miss matched, Kevin spacey was born to play lex Luther. He actually outplays every actor in this film. Routh makes a solid superman.
