Review of Superman Returns (2006) by Alfredo L — 28 Jul 2013
I loved this film! As a lifelong Superman fan with thousands of comic books, a nearly complete collection of movies and TV shows, and a ton of toys from my childhood, I was very nervous to see this in theaters back in the day.
I loved it though, and still do. Routh is a perfect Superman, and not just because of his looks. He easily shifts from Krypton royalty to a vulnerable and emotional man. I consider this to be a half sequel, in the sense that the great things of the Donner films is here, but that time and some characters are slightly altered.
This is the first Superman movie where we have the technology to properly display what Superman, the great superhero of all time, is capable of. The remainder of nearly as perfect, including Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, and so on.
Superman fans will geek out at all of the references and cameos in this film. Some people will argue that this film doesn't enough action, but Superman was up against humans. One punch would have splattered them all over the place.
This story had him displaying his strength in other ways and showed his conflict being more emotional. It set everything up for him to kick major butt in the sequel that never happened. My only complaint is his son with Lois Lane.
I grew to tolerate the idea, but the kid's abduction or death would have been a great ignition point in the sequel. All in all, this film has great casting/characters, beautiful visuals and special affects, and heart.
