Review of Superman Returns (2006) by Tatsuhito K — 14 Jul 2014
It is understandable that the public was disappointed by this contemporary update of the most American superhero. There's not much action, it's a little too corny and monotonous, and Kevin Spacy's Lex Luther is rather cartoonish than menacing, but Bryan Singer knows how to craft a visually appealing and emotionally satisfying superhero movie.
The bittersweet story has an appropriately dark edgy quality, but also has some superhero fun. This Superman is emotionally vulnerable and more down to earth than ever. "Returns" brings some fresh air to a beloved franchise.
Too bad they couldn't make a sequel.
