Review of Superman Returns (2006) by Azeem H — 17 Jan 2014
I have to admit, I don't hate this film, but the problem I feel this film has is that in tributing, the Donner/Lester Superman films, Singer does a really poor imitation. The Routh/Bosworth dynamic isn't as believable as the Reeve/Kidder dynamic. While Routh does well as Superman he doesn't convince as Clark Kent.
I was enjoying the film up until the final third. So everything up until the Kryptonite Island comes into view. Where I feel the film just becomes laughable. The fact that Superman and Lois have a kid (which you could spot as soon as the kid comes into view), the generic movie coma cliche, the fact Superman loses all dignity when he gets beat up by thugs. "I'm still Superman". The way he manages to lift the Island into space despite the fact just going near it would render him pretty weak and unable to lift anything. The Christ symbolism. Up until then I just thought it was solid, with aeroplane rescue pretty well worked scene.
Like I said I don't hate it, but falls flat in the final third.
