Review of Superman Returns (2006) by Jacob D — 23 Dec 2012
Superman has had surprisingly few remakes. Sure he had the boatload of films like 20 years ago, but modernly he has stayed somewhat out of film spotlight. "Returns" has the director of the first 2 (thank god not the third) X-Men films at the helm and he treats the world with surprising restraint.
There is actually very little violence on screen. Sure, you get the typical police scene and a few big earthquake-y like scenes, but that really all there is. It also takes a good step in realizing that after something like 50 years, we know who Superman is, so it doesn't reintroduce us to characters that we've already met before.
This also allows Brain to show a new side of these characters. Jimmy is still Jimmy, but Lois has almost completely changed. She has won a Pulitzer for "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman" and is in a stronger relationship, plus she has a son.
It's a lot for a Superman vet or newcomer to take i, but Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor is undoubtedly the Star of this show. He's evil and kind of funny, but still menacing. In short, "Returns" is a very well treated Superman reboot, and while it doesn't soar exceptionally high, we can still look up on it from below and marvel.
