Review of Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) by Jeremy B — 21 Jul 2008
This is the first time I've ever seen Superman 4, and I must say it was a good movie. Its always criticized by hardcore Superman fans for how horrible it supposedly is, but I enjoyed watching it. Nuclear Man is the best villain from a Superman movie, definitely the most destructive.
The battles between him and Superman in outer space are awesome. The whole movie is cheesy and the special effects are kind of lame but that was true of all the other Superman movies as well. Mariel Hemingway was the hottest chick from any Superman film, a former playboy cover girl to boot.
Its a shame she didn't have a bigger role. The nuclear disarmament preaching was cheesy and naive but that was the politics of the time. It didn't hurt the overall movie. Of course when Mariel is carried through space without a spacesuit, thats pretty stupid.
And Superman pushing the moon was ridiculous, though no more ridiculous than the stuff he does in the other movies. I also don't understand what they were doing with having Lois Lane act as though she didn't know Clark was Superman, even when no one else was around.
It almost seemed as though she had forgotten since the second movie, which makes no sense at all. This movie is only 90 minutes which is a good length, no bullshit filler, just a good storyline and lots of action.
Check it out, and please do so with an open mind cause it really is a good movie.
