Review of Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) by Jagt P — 13 Jun 2013
Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, although with the intention of bringing back Superman to the status of the first two films by bringing a very serious plot, a nuclear one, it doomed the franchise by budget cuts from Cannon Films, resulting in special effects simplified to the point of looking unfinished, the deletion of key scenes that caused irreparable plot holes, but on top of all, everyone involved being forced to do an under-budget forced film, causing the production and cast losing the interest and hope, which is very noticeable in everyone's faces in the film.
The few things that save this film from total disaster, are the main cast performances (Reeve, Kidder, Hackman, Cooper, McClure and even the newcomers Pillow and Hemingway), even when it is noticeable how tired and hopeless they were for the film, and the score of Alexander Courage backed with three new themes composed by John Williams himself (who was busy with Boston Pops and could not work for the film).
It is a shame that Christopher Reeve's saga ended in this fashion.
