Review of Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) by Liam U — 21 Dec 2009
Despite the plentiful amount of bad reviews, this was actually not too bad. Of course, it isn't as good as the previous three, but there are some nice touches. Christopher Reeve is, as always, excellent as both Clark Kent and the Man of Steel, Jon Cryer is an interesting and humorous addition, and the return of Gene Hackman is great stuff.
The story isn't awful - attempting to tackle the nuclear threat is an interesting move, but there are also some pretty huge and difficult to ignore plot holes. The special effects take a huge leap backwards from the previous three films and Mark Pillow is also rather dire.
Still, it's entertaining enough and watchable, it just unfortunately doesn't compare to the far superior 'Superman (1978)' and 'Superman II (1981).'.
