Review of Superman III (1983) by Mike E — 30 Sep 2009
Like many other franchise-spoiling flops, this is one that fans are sure to pretend never happened.
Superman III is a travesty of a superhero movie. Chock full of cheap shtick and annoying characters, the greatest of whom is the wholly un-funny Richard Pryor. The central conflict of the film is riddled with plot-holes, such as how does a bum who can't keep a dishwashing job design a world-threatening supercomputer that can do anything? And how is said supercomputer, which can figure out how to neutralize Superman, foiled by a little jar of acid?
Conversely, Reeve offers a performance that's promising, struggling against a movie trying to make him as bad as it is. The Clark Kent / Lana Lang scenes seem cut and pasted from some other movie--a decent one. To Reeve and O'Toole I give a solitary star.
Not that number Two was anything to scream about, but this threequel truly belongs in the Phantom Zone.
