Review of Superman III (1983) by David H — 04 Jun 2011
This film is an absolute disaster and one of the worst in the series just behind Superman 4. Just like Superman 2, Richard Lester felt the need to insert camp and make Superman 3 a comedy with all the camp amped up another two notches.
The idea of putting Richard Pryor in this movie was stupid and he clearly upstages Superman in almost every scene with Superman having only a few. I might as well have been watching a Richard Pryor movie with Superman as a co-star and the added bonus of Robert Vaughn as the films "villain", a weak replacement as Lex Luthor.
The part of this movie I every liked was when Superman is split into two different personalities with one being the "good" Superman and the other being the "evil" Superman. The fight between the two was awesome and the only highlight of the movie and when you watch it, you can't help but wish that their would have been more awesome Superman action scenes in the movie instead of suffering through Richard Pryor.
All in all, a terrible movie not worthwhile seeing. I can't help but think that if the Salkinds would have kept Donner on as director that he could made a great couple of movies. Unfortunately, we can only wonder.
