Review of Superman III (1983) by Troy F — 30 Jun 2013
Superman III has many problems from the get go. The opening sequence is terrible, with one of the worst if not THE worst credit titles I've ever seen. They're poorly placed and barely show onscreen, made me want to slap the editors in the face.
But that''s only the beginning. It's like the film had multiple scripts each unique and decided to clash them all together. What do you get? A film that's a bi-polar product of "what the hell are we doing" nonsense.
Literally, the film is all over the board here. The film is slow, boring, devoid of much action, reeking of 80's computerization, lacking an good villian, making little sense, being too slapsticky, but the worst part is Richard Pryor.
.. who's f'in film is this? Is this a Richard Pryor movie or a Superman movie? Cause I CAN'T TELL. Pryor is featured WAY TOO MUCH in this film, and while I kind of like him as an actor, he's very unfunny here.
The film's best moments involved Superman being turned evil and having to face his inner self. Just when I lost any hopes on this movie, this one sequence worked, and we get a great head-to-head battle between the two.
The rest of the film I wanted for to end. It had some good potential, but it got to the point where it was sloppy and could little be saved. Superman III is by no means terrible, but it is a poor sequel and barely a Superman film in my eyes thanks to Pryor's heavy involvement.
