Review of Superman III (1983) by Ty J — 03 Sep 2013
Well I think this movie was doomed from the beginning. The direction and style they went with was suspect the moment the movie started. Now it was nearly impossible to duplicate what Superman I & II has done.
But I think in few key areas, they managed to be a goofy and convenient occurrences happened in this movie that became almost completely predictable. Now the movie, surprisingly, was not a total loss.
Seeing Superman / Christopher Reeve go dark was & still is awesome & seeing him fight himself was pretty cool. As always, Christopher never disappointed. Annette O'toole was really good & Clark coming back to Smallville was the only piece that resembled anything from the other two movies.
And the robot scene gave me nightmares for at least a week, every kid back then suffered that. Now, I love Richard Pryor, I think he was the funniest comedian from my childhood & EVER! I thought that they misused him in this film.
They could have taken most his parts out & made a separate movie. Another problem with the film is that they have the bad guys for this movie a greedy billionaire tycoon, his sis & flunky girlfriend.
It was like having Lex Luthor in different skin, Gus was good, but been there done that. With the right corrections, this movie may not have been better than the other 2, but if they got rid of the goofy, give us a better villain, Brainiac, if he existed back then, it would lead up great the super computer battle.
As disappointing as it was, it had a few moments worth re-watching, but at least this isn't the worst superhero movie of all time. There are at least 5 that are far worse.
