Review of Superman III (1983) by Ken S — 11 Jan 2012
And Superman stopped really working. Without having to rely on any serious footage shot by Richard Donner, Richard Lester was now able to take the series as far into comedy as much as he wanted. The result is this Richard Pryor film in which Superman occasionally appears.
The evil Superman thing is actually kind of cool...but the whole thing gets pushed so far into the background that it barely matters. Then you have Lois Lane not really appearing in this one, and having Annette O'Toole as Lana Lang.
..and she just isn't Lois. No Hackman, just a guy playing a sort of Lex Luthor knock off villain. The idea of finding another villain from the comics seemed lost on the Salkinds or Lester. The film has some good moments, mostly from Reeve, but it just doesn't hold up well.
